PRONUNCIATION: some help

First try to repeat the audiowords in New English File here: today choose the NUMBERS, COUNTRIES & NATIONALITIES and COMMON OBJECTS.

Secondly, practise the pronunciation of the verb TO BE in the affirmative, negative and interrogative; visit here spokenenglish.org. The alphabet is here... it's quite fast, but don't panic, it's OK.

By the way, I found this great tool in "the English Blog". If you use Mozilla Firefox, there is a fantastic add-on for English learners: "Pronounce". It uses the services on www.merriam-webster.com so the accent is American. If I can find something similar in British English, I'll tell you. INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Download it here.  (be careful, if you have the version of Firefox 7.0.1  it doesn't work)
  2. Install it and restart Firefox
  3. Select a word
  4. Right click on it and choose Pronounce.
  5. luckily you'll hear the word pronounced.

Plurals here, personal pronouns here, possessive pronouns here. Practise the days of the week, months & seasons here and listen to them here. Finally, listen to all the sounds of English at stuff.co.uk.

This is the song by the Bangles, a group from the 80s, that we listened to in class, Eternal Flame. Enjoy!

If you want to revise all the grammar points, go here. For more explanations and exercises on the Present Continuous, visit the Present Continuous Guy here. Then you can do these exercises: affirmatives, negativesquestions. You can also listen to the Present Continuous in this song:

Then watch some examples that the Simpsons give you and play this listening game and identify the families they describe.

Present simple vs. present continuous. Remember the different uses:
PRESENT SIMPLE:
  • habits : Santos always talks about his family
  • routines (watch this video to remember) Mick goes to class every day
  • states: Paul has red hair
PRESENT CONTINUOUS:
  • (temporary) activities happening now The kids are watching TV.
  • activities happening around now, and not necessarily this very moment: Sally is studying really hard for her exams this week.
Let's see if you can tell the difference between both tenses! Do these exercises, or these ones. Can you complete this text using the appropriate form?

Let's now revise the VOCABULARY on flats and houses. You can practise the pronunciation here and also some common verb phrases.

Last but not least, you can practise asking for directions. Look at the map here and listen; choose True/False. If you want to learn some "travel survival sentences", click here.
